Planning a Camping Trip This Summer? Or Dreaming About a Warm Getaway? But… Can You Still Afford It This Year?
This year, my family and I are planning a trip to Banff.
It’s already next month, so we’ve slowly started getting everything ready.
We need to look at hotel prices, check flight costs, figure out rental car prices, pack snacks for the kids, and start preparing all the little things for the trip.
And honestly, this time feels a little different.
Instead of feeling excited first, I caught myself thinking:
“How much is this trip actually going to cost us?”
I looked at hotel prices and felt surprised.
Then I checked flight prices and felt surprised again.
Even thinking about restaurant meals during the trip somehow started to feel stressful.
A few years ago, a summer vacation just felt like a normal part of life.
Now even a fairly simple trip can start to feel like a major financial decision.
The Same Vacation Quietly Became Much More Expensive
Travel costs across Canada have gone up quite a bit recently.
Flights, gas, hotels, and even small travel expenses all seem more expensive than before.
How Much More Expensive Did Summer Travel Become?
| Recent airfare and fuel price comparisons were based on Canadian travel reports and national gas price averages. |
None of these increases feel completely shocking on their own.
But together, they quietly turn a normal vacation into a much bigger financial commitment.
Flights cost more.
Hotels cost more.
Gas costs more.
Restaurant meals cost more too.
And suddenly, a trip that once felt simple starts feeling much heavier on the wallet.
Even Vacations Start Feeling Stressful
Vacations are supposed to feel relaxing.
But lately, many people seem to start budgeting before they even leave home.
“Should we stay one less night?”
“Maybe we should skip restaurants this time.”
“Should we pack more snacks ourselves?”
Those thoughts start showing up pretty quickly.
And honestly, the small costs during travel add up fast:
coffee stops
fast food meals
parking fees
snacks for the kids
ice cream
souvenirs
Individually, none of them seem huge.
But by the end of the trip, the total can feel surprisingly expensive.
More People Are Quietly Changing the Way They Travel
Lately, it feels like many Canadians are not fully cancelling vacations —
they are simply downsizing them.
Some families are:
travelling closer to home
shortening their trips
choosing camping instead of hotels
planning fewer restaurant meals
Even around me, I’ve been hearing more people say:
“We can’t really travel like we used to.”
And honestly, I understand why.
Maybe Rest Does Not Always Need to Be Expensive
With travel costs getting so high, maybe not every vacation needs to involve expensive flights or luxury hotels.
Sometimes a quiet fishing trip near a lake, a family picnic, or even a simple weekend outdoors can still feel meaningful.
Maybe what many people need right now is not necessarily a bigger vacation —
but simply a chance to relax without feeling financially stressed afterward.
